Late Show and Late Night Highlights

Anyone see the Late Show with David Letterman last night?  His guests were the strongest part of the show.

Dave’s first guest was Zac Efron. I’ve never seen any of those High School Musical things, and I’m not a 15 year-old girl, so I don’t really know much about Zac. I thought maybe he was going to be pretty immature and stupid.  Instead, I was reasonably impressed by his relaxed demeanor and thought he handled himself well.

His next guests were Mike and Mike from ESPN. I’ve never listened to Mike and Mike, and I’m not a sports enthusiast, so I don’t really know much about these guys either. I thought maybe they were going to be loud and obnoxious, but they were really cool guys and they’re time with Dave was enjoyable to watch.

The musical guest was AC Newman with Nicole Atkins. I’ve never listened to either one of them before, and, you guessed it, I don’t really know much about either of them. I guess I really need to get out more. Overall, the performance was solid.

A couple of quick highlights from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon:

This is very sad, the man who created Dungeons and Dragons died last week. He was buried in a twelve-sided coffin.

A glitch on Amazon.com has caused gay and lesbian themed books to be removed from the system. Said one gay author, “Glitch please!”

I wish they would invite me to consult on the show so I could warn them when a segment is too long and not funny. I would do it for free. Well, almost free.

The air hockey game between Fallon and his first guest Denis Leary was pretty funny.

Late Show Highlights

Anyone see the Late Show with David Letterman last night?  There were some good monologue jokes:

53 (degrees) and gloomy. Just like Mel Gibson.

NBC is making a reality show staring (former Illinois governor) Rob Blagojevich. This is the same network that didn’t want me.

The mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, is cracking down on cab drivers using cell phones. I hate it when I’m in a cab and the driver is Twittering the Taliban. So I’m in a cab on my way to work the other day and the cab driver is talking on his cell phone, and I said, “I’m sorry, but what is all that about?” And he said, “Well, I’m giving my ransom demands to your family.”

Drew Barrymore was Dave’s first guest. They have a wonderful chemistry and the interview was very funny. It began with questions for Drew written by audience members. Dave, in true Dave fashion, spent almost as much time ragging on the audience as he did talking with Drew. For example:

Dave: We passed out questionnaires for our first guest tonight and I’m just perusing them.

Paul: How do they look?

Dave: They’re ridiculous. Why do we waste the paper? Here’s an example: Question number 1, a guy named Scot from California. Scot is forty-seven. What is your favorite cookie? Forty-seven.

Also, this exchange near the middle of the interview is worth noting:

Drew: I love New York. I have to give a shout-out to this certain [NYPD officer]. I was being chased by these horrible men the other night. I pulled over and rolled my window down and I asked this police officer, “Sir will you please help me? These mean, awful, scary men are chasing me. Will you save me?” And he goes, “I love you Drew Barrymore and I’ll rescue you.” And he did! NYPD thank you.

Dave: Yeah. That was me and Paul. Thanks a lot.

The music guest was Neko Case. Great voice.

Late Show Highlights

Anyone see The Late Show with David Letterman last night?

Jeff Goldblum was Dave’s first guest. I’ve always been a mediocre fan of Goldblum. I think he’s a great actor, but I still can’t forgive him for Independence Day. I really enjoyed watching him interact with Letterman. They’ve been friends for 30 years and there was good energy and synergy between them last night. Dave mentioned that Goldblum looks “timeless”, like he hasn’t aged in forever. It’s true. I wouldn’t mind looking that good when I’m his age. He ended his interview with a few rope tricks worth watching.

Jeff Dunham was Dave’s second guest. He’s an extremely talented ventriloquist. Here is the clip:
